UNITED NATIONS: A United Nations Security Council (UNSC) team has confirmed that Afghan authorities are providing a conducive environment for various terrorist groups particularly the proscribed Tehrik i Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The report released by the UNSC’s analytical support and sanctions monitoring team highlights concerns over Afghanistan serving as a safe haven for extremist groups. According to the findings such support has contributed to an increase in terrorist attacks within Pakistan.
The report further notes that according to some member states the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has collaborated with both TTP and the Islamic State’s Khorasan Province (ISIS K) in areas such as training camps and resource sharing. This cooperation has raised alarm among neighboring countries and international security agencies regarding the growing threat of cross border terrorism.
UN officials emphasized that the provision of safe havens and resources to terrorist groups undermines regional stability and violates international commitments to counterterrorism. The Security Council team has recommended increased monitoring and coordinated action to prevent the use of Afghan territory for terrorist activities.
The findings underscore ongoing concerns about Afghanistan’s role in enabling extremist networks with the potential for further escalation of militant operations affecting not only Pakistan but the broader South Asian region.
