ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly condemned the suicide bombing at Imambargah Khadijah al Kubra in Islamabad which killed at least 36 people and injured around 169 worshippers during Friday prayers.
A press statement by UNSC President James Kariuki described the attack as heinous and cowardly and confirmed that ISIL (Daesh) claimed responsibility. The Council expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Pakistan while wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
The UNSC reaffirmed that terrorism in all forms constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. It stressed the need to hold perpetrators organizers financiers and sponsors accountable and bring them to justice.
The Council called on all states to actively cooperate with Pakistan in line with international law and UNSC resolutions to combat terrorism. It also emphasized that acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of motivation or location.
UNSC members reiterated the importance of combating threats to international peace using all available means including obligations under international human rights law refugee law and humanitarian law, to prevent future attacks and ensure accountability.
