High-level Iran-US talks begin in Islamabad under Pakistan’s mediation to ease regional tensions and strengthen ceasefire efforts
ISLAMABAD: A United States delegation has arrived in Islamabad ahead of high-level peace talks between Iran and the United States, following a ceasefire reached on April 8 with mediation efforts attributed to Pakistan, officials said.
The delegation was received by senior Pakistani leadership, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.
According to officials, the talks are expected to begin later in the day and will focus on reducing tensions between Washington and Tehran after a period of heightened regional conflict. Pakistan is hosting the discussions as part of its broader diplomatic initiative to facilitate dialogue and encourage de-escalation between the two sides.
Earlier, an Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also arrived in Islamabad for the negotiations. The Foreign Office confirmed that the delegation was welcomed by senior Pakistani officials upon arrival.
Pakistani authorities said the objective of the Islamabad talks is to build momentum toward sustaining the ceasefire and promoting a wider diplomatic framework for long-term stability. Officials reiterated that Pakistan continues to support dialogue as the preferred path to resolving regional disputes and reducing tensions.
The negotiations are being viewed as a significant diplomatic effort aimed at encouraging constructive engagement between the United States and Iran under Pakistan’s facilitation.
