MUMBAI: In a dominant performance at the ICC T20 World Cup Super 8 stage, West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by 107 runs intensifying the challenge for India in Group 1. The match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai saw West Indies amass 254 runs in 20 overs, hitting an array of boundaries, marking the second highest total in T20 World Cup history.
Chasing the target Zimbabwe were bundled out for 147 giving West Indies a massive victory and placing them at the top of Group 1 with 2 points and a net run rate of 5.350. India, without any points and a net run rate of -3.800, sits third, while Zimbabwe occupies fourth place. South Africa, with a net run rate of 3.800 and 2 points, is in second place.
With two matches still to play against West Indies and Zimbabwe India now faces a challenging path to the semifinals. The team must not only win both remaining matches but do so by large margins to improve their net run rate. If points are tied at the end of the Super 8 stage, India’s lower net run rate could make it difficult to advance to the knockout rounds adding extra pressure on the team in upcoming fixtures.
