Russia carried out a large scale overnight air assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure hitting power plants and electricity networks across multiple regions as winter temperatures continue to fall Ukrainian officials said Saturday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that Russian forces launched more than 400 drones along with around 40 missiles of various types. The strikes targeted electricity generation facilities substations and distribution lines causing widespread disruption to the national power grid.
Ukraine’s energy system, already weakened by nearly four years of war is under increasing strain as freezing weather boosts demand for electricity and heating. Officials said the latest attack further damaged critical infrastructure at a particularly vulnerable time.
Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed that two major thermal power plants in western Ukraine were hit along with key substations. Emergency power outages were imposed nationwide, and Ukraine requested urgent electricity imports from Poland to stabilize the grid.
Ukraine’s largest private energy producer DTEK reported serious damage to its facilities calling this the tenth major attack since October 2025.
The assault comes just days after US brokered peace talks failed to achieve a breakthrough, underscoring ongoing tensions and stalled diplomacy.
