Telecom regulator finalizes spectrum process as operators prepare for next-generation connectivity
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to take a major leap in digital connectivity as preparations for the launch of 5G services near completion, with licenses expected to be issued as early as next week, officials said.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has finalized arrangements following the spectrum auction process, paving the way for telecom operators to begin deploying next-generation mobile networks ahead of Eid ul Fitr.
According to PTA officials, authorities are considering issuing licenses simultaneously to the country’s three major telecom operators to ensure a level playing field and fair competition in the market.
Strict financial requirements have been introduced as part of the licensing framework. Each operator must submit a $15 million bank guarantee to secure participation. Officials confirmed that one major company has already fulfilled the requirement, while the remaining operators are expected to comply shortly.
The regulator is also reviewing a proposal to hold a formal license distribution ceremony at PTA headquarters to mark the milestone in Pakistan’s telecom sector.
Industry experts say the introduction of 5G technology will significantly enhance internet speeds, improve network reliability, and open new opportunities across key sectors. These include IT exports, the digital economy, and the country’s rapidly growing freelance workforce.
