New “Guest Chat” option allows temporary conversations with non-WhatsApp users via invite links
WhatsApp has begun testing a new feature that allows users to chat with people who do not have a WhatsApp account, marking a significant shift in how the platform connects users.
The feature, called “Guest Chat,” is currently available to a limited number of beta testers and remains in the experimental phase, according to reports. Developed by parent company Meta, the tool aims to simplify communication with non-users.
Through this option, users can generate a shareable invite link from the “Invite a Friend” section within the app. When the recipient opens the link on a mobile or desktop browser, they can join a temporary conversation without registering for an account.
Guest participants will be labeled as “Guest” during chats, making it clear they are not standard users. Despite the temporary nature, all conversations will remain protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring privacy between participants.
However, the feature comes with limitations. Guest users cannot join group chats, send media files, or access voice and video calling. The functionality is designed strictly for short-term, text-based communication.
For added security, invite links will automatically expire after 10 days if unused. Since anyone with the link can join, users are advised to share it cautiously.
Meta has not confirmed when the feature will roll out globally, but further expansion is expected if testing proves successful.
