Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says Pakistan will continue supporting the UN Charter, international law and effective multilateral cooperation.
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter during a meeting with Ambassador Olara Otunnu, a candidate for the UN secretary-general post.
Otunnu was accompanied by Uganda’s Special Envoy of the President and former Prime Minister, Ruhakana Rugunda, during the meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch also attended the meeting, according to a Prime Minister’s Office press release issued Friday.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s firm commitment to the principles and objectives enshrined in the UN Charter.
He also stressed the importance of ensuring respect for international law and international treaties, the statement said.
The prime minister said Pakistan would continue its strong and consistent support for the multilateral system and an effective role for the United Nations in global affairs.
He emphasized the importance of the UN platform and multilateral cooperation in addressing the challenges facing the international community.
The meeting comes as Otunnu seeks the position of UN secretary-general. The discussions focused on Pakistan’s longstanding commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter and the importance of international law.
Pakistan has consistently emphasized the role of multilateral institutions in addressing global challenges and promoting cooperation among nations.
