Washington: Former U.S. Defense Secretary and ex CIA Director Leon Panetta has sharply criticized President Donald Trump over his handling of the ongoing conflict with Iran stating that after three weeks of war Trump is now trapped in a no win situation.
In an interview with a British newspaper Panetta said Trump’s strategy lacks solid planning and relies more on wishful thinking than realistic policy. He warned that the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was a major mistake, as it did not trigger public uprising but instead brought forward a more hardline leadership.
Panetta also expressed concern over the administration’s failure to prepare for the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz a critical global oil route. He noted that such a move could spark an international energy crisis.
According to Panetta, the U.S. may now be forced to target Iran’s coastal defenses to secure oil shipping routes, a step that could further escalate the conflict and increase casualties.
