Hostages freed after negotiations as security forces regain control of the area
KURRAM: Militants launched an assault on an under-construction police station in central Kurram on the second day of Eid, triggering a gunbattle that left two attackers dead, officials said.
The assault took place in the Jabo area, where construction work was ongoing and several laborers were present. A small number of police personnel were deployed at the site to provide security when armed militants reportedly demanded a halt to the construction.
Authorities said the situation escalated into an exchange of fire between security forces and the assailants, resulting in the killing of two militants.
During the assault, the attackers abducted several workers along with some police personnel, raising concerns about their safety. Local elders later intervened, facilitating negotiations that led to the safe release of the abducted laborers, officials confirmed.
Reinforcements from law enforcement agencies reached the site shortly after the incident and secured the area, bringing the situation under control.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in the region, where militant groups continue to target state infrastructure and civilians. Officials reiterated the need for coordinated efforts between authorities and local communities to maintain stability and prevent further violence.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
