Mahira Khan Calls for Royalty System Reform in Pakistan’s Entertainment Industry

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Renowned Pakistani actress Mahira Khan has once again raised concerns over the absence of a structured royalty system in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, highlighting the financial struggles faced by junior artists, technicians, and support staff.

Speaking on a recent appearance on Gup Shab With Vasay Chaudhry alongside her co star Fahad Mustafa, Khan discussed the imbalance in revenue distribution within the industry. She noted that while leading actors are often able to sustain themselves financially many behind-the-scenes workers lack access to residual income.

Khan emphasized that in global entertainment industries, royalty systems ensure artists receive ongoing payments for their work. She argued that although Pakistan does not need to replicate Hollywood models exactly, a basic royalty framework is essential to provide financial stability to artists.

She further pointed out that television channels and broadcasters generate significant revenue through multiple streams, yet much of this income remains inaccessible to the majority of contributors involved in production.

Khan’s remarks have reignited discussions about the need for structural reforms in the industry. Despite the presence of representative bodies such as ACT and PBA a comprehensive royalty system has yet to be implemented leaving many artists economically vulnerable.
