ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the provision of 55 electric vehicles (EVs) for the Islamabad Traffic Police to modernize the city’s traffic management and promote eco-friendly transportation. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Islamabad, where the Prime Minister was briefed by IG Islamabad on the initiative.
The project began a few months ago, and 15 EVs have already been handed over to the traffic police. The remaining vehicles will join the fleet soon and will be deployed on key city roads to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and support law enforcement efforts.
Each EV can cover 350 to 400 kilometers on a full charge, with fast charging taking 60 to 90 minutes, while standard charging takes 6 to 8 hours. Compared to petrol vehicles, each EV is expected to save approximately Rs550,000 per month, allowing the government to recover the purchase cost within 13 to 14 months.
PM Shehbaz highlighted that the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly solutions while enhancing urban mobility in Islamabad. The introduction of EVs is expected to reduce fuel costs, cut emissions, and improve the efficiency of traffic policing in the capital.
