Shafi Jan, Special Assistant for Information and Public Relations of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marks World Press Freedom Day with a powerful message underscoring rising threats to journalism, misinformation challenges, and government commitment to media protection.
On World Press Freedom Day, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Special Assistant for Information and Public Relations, Shafi Jan, issued a forceful statement highlighting both the importance of a free press and the growing dangers confronting journalists worldwide.
He emphasized that free and responsible journalism remains the foundation of any strong democratic society, playing a decisive role in ensuring accountability, strengthening public awareness, and promoting informed civic dialogue.
According to his message, access to credible information and the media’s role in fostering dialogue and trust are central to social cohesion. He stressed that an independent media is essential for peace, economic stability, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights.
However, he also warned that the modern information landscape has become increasingly complex. The rapid spread of digital content, coupled with misinformation, propaganda, and the misuse of artificial intelligence, is creating serious challenges for media integrity and public trust.
He expressed concern over the mounting pressure on press freedom across the world, noting that journalists continue to face threats, restrictions, and economic difficulties that demand urgent attention from governments and institutions.
Shafi Jan reiterated that the provincial government remains committed to safeguarding press freedom, protecting journalists, and strengthening their professional rights. He also paid tribute to journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty, calling their sacrifices unforgettable and a cornerstone of press history.
His message reflects a broader global debate on how to balance free expression with responsible information sharing in an era defined by digital disruption and rising misinformation risks.
