Authorities deploy police, Rangers, and FC units as June 9 protest call raises fears of renewed unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
A heightened security alert has been triggered in Azad Jammu and Kashmir as authorities rush additional forces ahead of a planned protest call on June 9, raising concerns of possible unrest in the sensitive region.
A contingent of Islamabad Police has been deployed to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, joining Rangers and Frontier Corps units already mobilized to support local administration in maintaining order.
The move comes in response to a protest call by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, which has revived long-standing demands including reduced utility tariffs, subsidised flour prices, and the removal of reserved legislative seats. The group argues these measures are necessary to address economic inequality and end elite privileges.
Tensions remain high due to memories of violent clashes in October 2025, when similar demonstrations led to casualties, communication shutdowns, and a heavy security crackdown. Authorities say they are acting pre-emptively to prevent a repeat of that crisis.
The AJK administration has also issued a travel advisory, urging tourists to avoid non-essential visits between June 5 and June 20, while encouraging those already present to leave the region. Officials insist the reinforcements are intended to ensure public safety while preserving the right to peaceful protest.
With further federal deployments expected, the situation remains fluid as security agencies closely monitor developments leading up to June 9.
