Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says balancing population growth with national resources is essential for sustainable development, directing the immediate activation of the National Population Council.
Pakistan’s growing population has become one of the country’s most pressing development challenges, prompting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to call for urgent policy reforms aimed at balancing population growth with available national resources.
Chairing a high-level meeting on population welfare in Islamabad, the prime minister said sustainable development can only be achieved when population growth is aligned with the country’s economic capacity and resource availability. He warned that the rapidly increasing population is placing significant pressure on national resources, making effective population planning a national priority.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials, including Asim Munir, who reviewed ongoing initiatives designed to manage population growth and improve family welfare programs across the country.
Addressing participants, the prime minister stressed that population planning should be integrated with human resource development and Pakistan’s long-term economic objectives. He instructed authorities to convene the inaugural meeting of the National Population Council at the earliest opportunity and directed officials to finalize its organizational structure without delay.
Shehbaz Sharif also announced that he will personally chair the National Population Council. Officials informed the meeting that the council will include the chief ministers of all four provinces, the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, and other key stakeholders. Its secretariat will operate under the Ministry of Planning.
