Pakistan strengthens diplomatic engagement with Iran as senior leaders attend Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral amid international participation.
Pakistan’s Senate Chairman, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, arrived in Tehran on Friday leading a high-level delegation to participate in the funeral prayers and burial ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Senior Iranian officials welcomed the delegation upon its arrival in the Iranian capital.
Speaking to the media, Gilani described Ayatollah Khamenei as one of the Muslim world’s most respected and influential leaders. He said the late Iranian leader played a pivotal role in regional affairs while promoting Islamic unity and cooperation among Muslim nations.
Gilani emphasized the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Iran, highlighting their shared historical, religious, cultural, and brotherly ties. He said Pakistan’s participation in the funeral ceremonies reflects Islamabad’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with its neighboring country.
The visit comes as Iran hosts funeral ceremonies under tight security, with representatives and dignitaries from more than 100 countries expected to attend. Iranian authorities have declared a seven-day national mourning period, with the burial scheduled to take place in Mashhad on July 9.
