Heavy rainfall is expected to trigger flash floods, urban flooding and landslides in several regions of Pakistan, prompting the NDMA to issue nationwide safety advisories.
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued multiple weather alerts warning of flash floods, urban flooding and landslides across several parts of the country as heavy monsoon rains continue.
According to the NDMA, flash flood risks remain high from July 18 to 23 in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) said the current weather pattern is consistent with its earlier forecasts and that continuous monitoring is underway to provide timely warnings to relevant authorities.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rivers and mountain streams may experience moderate to high flooding. Upper and central districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also at risk of overflowing hill torrents and flash floods. In AJK, water levels are expected to rise significantly in the Neelum, Jhelum and Poonch rivers, along with adjoining streams.
The NDMA has also issued a landslide alert for AJK from July 19 to 24. Continuous rainfall could trigger landslides in Neelum, Haveli, Poonch, Muzaffarabad and Bagh, while moderate risks exist in Kotli, Sudhnoti, Mirpur and Bhimber. Major roads in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Kahuta and Bhimber may also be affected by falling debris and traffic disruptions.
Separate alerts remain in effect for Punjab and northeastern Balochistan through July 23 due to the risk of flash floods in seasonal streams. Rising water levels are expected in the Chenab and Ravi rivers, with residents in low-lying areas urged to remain vigilant.
The authority has further warned of urban flooding between July 18 and 23 in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Hafizabad and Sheikhupura. Low-lying areas of Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan and Charsadda may also face inundation.
