Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has completed three years in prison following his arrest in the Toshakhana case, marking another significant milestone in one of Pakistan’s most closely watched political and legal sagas.
Imran Khan was taken into custody on August 5, 2023, after a court convicted him in the Toshakhana case. Following his arrest, he was moved from his residence at Zaman Park in Lahore to District Jail Attock under heightened security arrangements.
He remained at Attock Jail for one month and 21 days while courts continued hearing multiple cases filed against him. During this period, security around the prison remained tight as legal proceedings unfolded in different courts across the country.
On September 26, 2023, the Islamabad High Court ordered his transfer to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Since then, the former prime minister has remained incarcerated there while appearing before courts in several ongoing cases.
In accordance with Pakistan Prison Rules, Imran Khan has been provided better-class prison facilities because of his status as a former head of government. He is housed in a separate compound consisting of seven cells inside Adiala Jail, with the designated area secured and managed under prison regulations.
Throughout his three years in custody, reports have indicated that Imran Khan has experienced several health-related concerns requiring periodic medical attention. His legal team has repeatedly raised concerns regarding his health and sought improved medical care, while prison authorities have maintained that he is receiving treatment and facilities in accordance with the law.
Despite his imprisonment, Imran Khan remains one of Pakistan’s most influential political figures. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), continues to pursue legal and political avenues seeking his release, while hearings in multiple cases against the former premier remain ongoing.
