Pakistan Strikes Major Gas Discovery in Sindh, Unlocking New Offshore Exploration Potential

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Pakistan Petroleum Limited says the Dolphin exploration well has confirmed a new petroleum system in Sindh’s Lower Indus Basin, opening fresh prospects for future exploration.

KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a major breakthrough in hydrocarbon exploration after an exploration well in Sindh produced a significant discovery of high-quality natural gas, potentially opening a new chapter for energy exploration in the country.

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) said its company-operated Dolphin exploration well, located in the Sarani Block in Sujawal district, has made a major gas discovery. The development is being viewed as an important milestone because it marks the first reported hydrocarbon discovery from the Jurassic-age Chiltan Formation in the Lower Indus Basin.

According to PPL, the discovery provides evidence of an active petroleum system in the area. The result could encourage further exploration across the onshore swamp region of Sindh, as well as its potentially prospective shallow marine extensions.

The discovery is significant for Pakistan, which continues to face challenges related to domestic energy supply and reliance on imported fuels. New local gas resources could, depending on the scale and commercial viability of the find, contribute to strengthening domestic energy security and reducing pressure on imports.

The Dolphin well also carries wider significance for Pakistan’s exploration industry. Successful identification of hydrocarbons in the Chiltan Formation may provide geological data that can guide future exploration activity in areas that have not previously produced commercial discoveries from the same formation.

However, the ultimate economic importance of the discovery will depend on further evaluation, including assessment of the reservoir, recoverable resources and commercial development potential.
