ChatGPT’s new image feature lets users transform personal photos into customized stickers, remove backgrounds and export creations to iMessage and WhatsApp.
OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT feature that allows users to turn personal photos into custom stickers for messaging apps, eliminating the need for separate photo-editing or sticker-making tools.
The feature can take images from a user’s photo library, remove the background and convert the subject into a sticker with a transparent background. Users can create individual stickers or combine several images to build a complete sticker pack.
To create a sticker, users can open ChatGPT and select the Images section from the sidebar. They can then choose Stickers and upload one or more photos.
ChatGPT offers several visual styles, including 3D, hand-drawn, holographic, comic book and anime-inspired designs. Users can select a style or describe their preferred appearance through a text prompt.
The same photo can therefore be transformed into different designs. A portrait, for example, can become an illustrated sticker, while a pet photo can be converted into a cartoon-style creation.
Users can also request changes before finalizing a sticker, including adding or removing elements from the image. The feature supports reference images as well, allowing users to provide a visual example and ask ChatGPT to create a sticker with a similar style.
Once the stickers are ready, users can select Add to Chat Apps. The available options include iMessage, WhatsApp and Save to Photos.
The iMessage option allows users to add their creations to Apple’s messaging platform, while WhatsApp users can export the stickers for use in chats. However, WhatsApp requires users to have at least three stickers ready when exporting a sticker pack. The requirement comes from WhatsApp rather than ChatGPT.
Users can also save their stickers to Photos, giving them the option to use the images on other platforms or in future projects.
The transparent-background capability may also have applications beyond stickers. Users can create clean cutouts of people, objects or products and use them in other creative projects.
