Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan sign a series of agreements covering trade, security, education, technology, environment and other areas.
BISHKEK: Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed multiple bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding on Wednesday to expand cooperation across trade, security, education, health, environment and technology.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov witnessed the signing ceremony in Bishkek, where representatives of the two countries exchanged the pre-signed documents.
The two leaders also signed a joint statement outlining discussions and objectives linked to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan. He arrived in Bishkek to attend the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.
Under the agreements, the foreign ministries of Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan signed a Diplomatic Programme of Cooperation for 2026-2027. An MoU was also signed between the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of the Kyrgyz Republic to strengthen research collaboration.
The two countries finalized agreements on transit trade to facilitate commercial movement and promote science and technological cooperation. They also signed a treaty on extradition and formulated a draft agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
The interior ministries signed an MoU to combat the illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursor chemicals.
Cooperation in health and education was also expanded. The Kyrgyz health ministry and Pakistan Medical and Dental Council signed an MoU on medical education, while the two countries’ education ministries agreed to promote cooperation in education.
An MoU between the Kyrgyz Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision and Pakistan’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination will strengthen cooperation on environmental protection and climate change.
The National Defence University Pakistan and the National Institute for Strategic Initiatives of Kyrgyzstan signed an MoU covering academic research and cooperative activities.
The two sides also agreed to cooperate in the virtual assets sector through an MoU between Kyrgyzstan’s National Agency for Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies and Pakistan’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.
A separate agreement established a sister-city relationship between Lahore and Osh.
