A budget of around Rs1 million can open the door to several used-car options in Pakistan, from Suzuki Mehran to Honda City.
A new flagship iPhone can cost a substantial amount, but for Pakistanis working with a budget of around Rs1 million, the same money can also buy an older used car.
Apple recently introduced its new iPhone Duo, with prices in the United States starting at $1,999, while the top-end model with 2TB storage is priced at $3,199.
The official Pakistani price of the phone has not yet been announced. However, a budget of around Rs1 million puts several used vehicles within consideration in Pakistan’s second-hand car market.
Here are five options worth considering:
Suzuki Mehran
The Suzuki Mehran remains one of the easiest options to find in this price range. Several 2008 to 2010 models can be available around Rs1 million, while some 2015 models may also fall close to the upper end of the budget.
Its biggest advantage is simplicity. Spare parts are widely available, and mechanics familiar with the car can be found in most areas.
However, the Mehran offers limited comfort and modern features, making it more suitable for buyers who prioritize low running and repair costs.
Hyundai Santro
The Hyundai Santro is another option in this price range. Older models can be found around Rs1 million, although cleaner and later models may cost more.
Compared with the Mehran, the Santro generally offers greater comfort and can be a more practical choice for family use.
Buyers should carefully inspect the engine, air conditioning, suspension, steering and cooling system before making a purchase.
Suzuki Cultus
Some 2007 to 2010 Suzuki Cultus VXRi models may be available around Rs1 million, although vehicles in better condition can command higher prices.
The Cultus offers reasonable interior space, readily available parts and practical features for everyday driving, making it a balanced option for families and daily commuters.
Honda Civic
An older Honda Civic can provide more comfort and a stronger driving experience than the smaller cars in this price range.
Models from around 2004 or 2005 may sometimes be found close to Rs1 million. However, buyers should exercise particular caution with cheaper examples.
The engine, transmission, air conditioning, suspension and cooling system should be thoroughly inspected. The vehicle’s accident and repair history should also be checked, as a cheap Civic can lead to significant repair expenses.
Honda City
The Honda City is another possibility for buyers looking for a sedan, although finding a well-maintained example around Rs1 million may be difficult.
An older EXi model, such as the 2001 version, may be a more realistic choice. A 2006 or 2007 i-DSI available within the budget could also be worth considering if it is in good condition.
Experts and experienced buyers generally recommend keeping some money aside rather than spending the entire budget on the vehicle. With cars in this price range likely to be relatively old, buyers may need additional funds for tyres, battery, air conditioning, suspension, engine oil, cooling-system work and other repairs.
Keeping around Rs100,000 to Rs200,000 in reserve can help cover unexpected expenses after the purchase.
