The US State Department has urged Americans in the Middle East to remain vigilant as missile and drone attacks raise concerns over further regional escalation and travel disruptions.
WASHINGTON: The United States has issued a fresh security alert for Americans in the Middle East as tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement intensify, raising concerns that the confrontation could escalate rapidly.
The US State Department urged Americans already in the region to exercise heightened vigilance and remain alert to sudden changes in the security environment. It also warned that people travelling to or through the Middle East could face flight cancellations, airspace closures and other disruptions.
The warning follows a series of Houthi attacks and attempted attacks targeting Saudi territory. Saudi authorities said Saturday that their air-defence systems intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched toward Riyadh.
Saudi officials also reported attempted attacks against other locations, including Yanbu, Taif, Baysh and Farasan.
The Houthis, meanwhile, claimed they had targeted what they described as sensitive sites in Riyadh as well as an Aramco facility in Yanbu. The claims came amid a broader escalation involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
The latest US alert noted that the Houthis have previously targeted civilian airports and warned that the security situation could deteriorate quickly. Americans travelling in the region have been advised to closely monitor information from airports and airlines because operations could change with little notice.
The State Department has maintained a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory for Saudi Arabia, citing risks associated with armed conflict, terrorism and missile and drone attacks. It separately advises Americans against travelling to areas near Saudi Arabia’s border with Yemen.
The latest warning comes amid wider instability across the Middle East, where security concerns have raised the possibility of further disruptions to civilian and commercial air travel.
Recent attacks have also affected aviation activity around Riyadh. Reports said explosions and smoke were seen near King Khalid International Airport following the attempted missile strike, while some flights experienced delays and disruptions.
For US citizens already in the region, Washington has advised following instructions from local authorities and monitoring updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate.
The continuing missile and drone attacks have heightened concerns about further escalation, with potential consequences for civilians, airports and regional travel.
