Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has questioned the grand reception given to young pacer Razaullah following his impressive Test debut against England, pointing out that Pakistan had suffered a 3-0 series defeat.
Razaullah was handed his Test debut in the third and final match of the series after Pakistan made several changes to its squad following defeats at Headingley and Lord’s. The young pacer had previously gained experience mainly through the Pakistan Super League.
He made an immediate impact in his first Test appearance, claiming four wickets in England’s first innings before producing an aggressive 81-run knock in Pakistan’s second innings. His performance helped Pakistan avoid an innings defeat in the match.
Following his debut, Razaullah received a large welcome upon returning to Pakistan. A crowd gathered at Islamabad International Airport, where supporters presented him with bouquets and garlands to celebrate his individual performance.
Speaking at a charity event in Manchester, Akram questioned the scale of the reception while acknowledging the youngster’s contribution.
The former Pakistan captain said the reaction highlighted a broader issue in the way individual performances are viewed in the country. He argued that while strong individual displays should be recognised, the overall team result also needs to be considered.
Akram also criticised what he described as an acceptance of mediocrity in Pakistan cricket. He said changing coaches or administrators would not automatically resolve the team’s problems, stressing that players ultimately remain responsible for their performances on the field.
Despite Pakistan’s difficult series, Razaullah’s debut emerged as one of the few positives from the England tour. His four-wicket haul and 81-run innings demonstrated his ability to contribute with both ball and bat and offered Pakistan a promising new pace option.
