Pakistan’s deputy prime minister urges the Taliban to fulfill international commitments and take concrete steps against terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.
ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sen. Mohammad Ishaq Dar has called for concrete and verifiable measures to prevent Afghan territory from being used for terrorism against neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan.
Dar made the remarks on Sept. 22 while addressing a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Contact Group on Afghanistan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York.
The deputy prime minister expressed deep concern over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and stressed the need for effective action to address the threat emanating from the country.
He said Pakistan continued to make sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, while a recent terrorist attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kohat district served as a stark reminder of the serious security threat facing the region.
The attack killed innocent civilians and injured dozens of people, highlighting, according to Dar, the urgent need for concrete action against terrorist groups and their safe havens.
Dar urged the Taliban to honor Afghanistan’s international obligations and commitments and end support for terrorist groups.
He also emphasized the importance of preventing Afghan territory from being used as a base for attacks against neighboring states, particularly Pakistan.
Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns over militant groups operating from Afghanistan and has called for measures to ensure that Afghan soil is not used for cross-border terrorism.
At the OIC meeting, Dar’s remarks focused on the security implications of terrorist group presence in Afghanistan and the need for verifiable steps to address the issue.
