NCCIA says the 17-year-old allegedly used an AI tool to seek information related to toxic substances and sourced chemicals from Australia and Islamabad.
BAHAWALPUR: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested a 17-year-old student in Bahawalpur over an alleged attempt to poison his father, with investigators saying the teenager had also used an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to seek information related to toxic substances.
According to initial investigation details, the teenager repeatedly asked an AI tool questions about poisonous substances. Investigators also found that he had allegedly obtained chemical materials from Australia and Islamabad.
The NCCIA said the teenager was allegedly influenced by a crime drama and subsequently attempted to carry out the plan against his father. Investigators reportedly found evidence of chemical experimentation at the teenager’s residence.
The initial alleged attempt to harm his father failed. According to investigators, the teenager then turned to an AI system again and sought further guidance in an apparent attempt to repeat the plan.
However, before the next response could be received, the relevant authorities were alerted to the activity, according to the investigation. The information reportedly originated from intelligence received from abroad, prompting the NCCIA to investigate the teenager’s online activities and subsequently arrest him in Bahawalpur.
Initial findings indicate that the teenager allegedly took the step after repeatedly being reprimanded by his father. The circumstances surrounding the alleged motive and the teenager’s online activity remain part of the investigation.
The case has drawn attention to the potential misuse of AI tools by minors to seek harmful information. Authorities have not publicly disclosed specific details about the substances allegedly involved or the method reportedly sought by the teenager.
The NCCIA is responsible for cybercrime investigations and digital forensics in Pakistan, including the collection and analysis of electronic evidence relevant to investigations.
