Meta’s: Threads is rapidly emerging as a strong competitor to X, particularly on mobile devices, but Elon Musk owned X continues to dominate web usage highlighting a sharp divide in how users engage across platforms.
Threads’ rise has been driven by its tight integration with Meta’s ecosystem. Seamless sign-ups via Instagram and aggressive cross-promotion on Facebook and Instagram have funneled millions of users onto the platform. This strategy has paid off on smartphones, where Threads now records higher daily engagement than X.
The picture looks very different on desktop. In January, Threads attracted about 8.5 million daily web users, compared with X’s estimated 145 million. Long-standing user habits play a major role. X remains the primary destination for real-time news, political debate, and professional commentary activities that are especially common among desktop users.
Functionality also matters. Journalists, analysts, and businesses continue to rely on X’s mature web tools, including advanced search, lists, and real-time monitoring features, which Threads has yet to fully replicate.
While Threads focuses on community-driven and casual conversations that resonate on mobile, X maintains its web dominance by serving power users and news-driven audiences. Closing this gap will depend on how quickly Threads can enhance its web experience and change entrenched user behavior.
