ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Tuesday categorically denied reports of a fresh military operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Tirah Valley clarifying that recent evacuations from the area are not linked to any armed action against militants.
Addressing a press conference alongside Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Ikhtiar Wali Khan Khawaja Asif said there was absolutely no question of launching a military operation in Tirah. He said the movement of residents had caused unnecessary panic and confusion.
The minister explained that members of the banned Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and their families estimated to be around 400 to 500 individuals, have been present in the area for some time. However he stressed that their presence does not warrant a full-scale military operation.
Khawaja Asif said the relocation of residents was conducted under a mutually agreed plan involving local jirga elders and the provincial government. He clarified that the armed forces did not issue evacuation orders and displayed a notification issued by the KP government in this regard.
He added that the provincial government had approved a Rs4 billion relief package to assist affected families. Recalling past operations in Tirah he said Pakistan now relies on intelligence-based operations which are more effective and minimize collateral damage.
The defence minister also criticized the lack of basic services in Tirah and raised concerns over illegal hemp cultivation alleging that its profits benefit militant and politically connected elements.
