Former England cricketer Mark Butcher has described the India Pakistan cricket rivalry as the most financially lucrative contest in world cricket claiming it has compelled the International Cricket Council (ICC) to repeatedly place both teams in the same group during major tournaments.
Speaking on the ongoing India Pakistan cricket standoff Butcher said that their grouping is no longer a coincidence but a deliberate and fixed formula driven by commercial interests. His comments come amid reports that Pakistan has refused to play India in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup a move that has reportedly caused significant concern within the ICC.
Butcher further alleged that while ICC rules are strictly enforced on most teams, India often receives special considerations. Citing past events he claimed India was granted favorable treatment during the Champions Trophy adding that India plays at venues of its choosing while other teams are expected to adjust.
However the former England batter praised Pakistan’s handling of the current situation calling it a smart and effective strategy. According to Butcher refusing to play was the only viable way for Pakistan to exert pressure on both India and the ICC and it has proven to be a strong negotiating move.
