WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said he is considering deploying a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East amid renewed diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
Trump’s remarks come as the United States and Iran prepare to resume negotiations aimed at preventing a fresh escalation in tensions. Recent talks reportedly facilitated by Oman were described by Iran’s Foreign Ministry as an opportunity to assess US seriousness and maintain diplomatic momentum.
The discussions took place while the US had already deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln to the region a move that fueled speculation about potential military action. Trump has now signaled that additional naval assets could be sent if necessary.
In interviews with Israeli media Trump warned that failure to reach an agreement with Iran could result in very strong action.Either we reach a deal or we will have to take very tough steps he stated.
US officials indicated that possible candidates for deployment include the USS George Washington, currently stationed in Asia and the USS George H.W. Bush from the US East Coast. Both vessels could require at least a week to reach the Middle East.
Meanwhile the Pentagon is also considering the USS Gerald Ford as another potential option.
