Legal community says protest aims to safeguard constitutional rights and professional dignity
Peshawar: Lawyers across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continued their strike for a second consecutive day, significantly disrupting routine court operations and causing difficulties for litigants seeking hearings and legal relief.
The protest was launched following the arrest and alleged mistreatment of Ali Zaman, a member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council. Acting on a call from the council and the Peshawar High Court Bar, lawyers boycotted court proceedings throughout the province. Due to their absence, many cases could not be heard, and litigants were sent back with new hearing dates.
Bar leaders, including Peshawar High Court Bar President Aminur Rehman, Secretary General Ashfaq Ahmad Dawoodzai, District Bar President Qaiser Zaman, and Bar Council member Syed Mubashir Shah, strongly condemned the arrest. They stated that targeting lawyers who raise their voices for public rights is regrettable and undermines the legal profession.
Officials emphasized that the strike is not aimed at any institution but seeks to protect the dignity of lawyers and uphold constitutional and legal rights. The legal community has indicated that protests may continue if their concerns are not addressed.
