Pakistan’s journey to the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup has become complicated after their defeat at the hands of England cricket team on Tuesday. The loss in the Super 8 stage has left Pakistan dependent on other match outcomes to secure a semifinal spot.
Currently in Group 2 England tops the table with two wins and four points. Pakistan and New Zealand cricket team each have one point while Sri Lanka cricket team have yet to win a match.
For Pakistan to reach the semifinals they must defeat Sri Lanka in their final group match. Additionally England needs to beat New Zealand and Sri Lanka must also defeat New Zealand. In this scenario, Pakistan would advance with three points, while New Zealand would remain at zero and Sri Lanka at two points.
However if England beats New Zealand but New Zealand defeats Sri Lanka, both Pakistan and New Zealand would finish on three points each. In that case the semifinal qualification would be determined based on net run rate adding more uncertainty to Pakistan’s campaign. Pakistan now faces a high-stakes final match with multiple possible outcomes affecting their fate.
