KARACHI: A judicial commission investigating the Gul Plaza fire tragedy held a key meeting on Friday, directing authorities to submit official fire response records as part of the ongoing probe.
During the hearing, the Saddar Gul Plaza Association submitted a written reply to the commission’s questionnaire. However, the association failed to provide ownership and title records of the shops operating inside the building.
The association told the commission it collected Rs1,500 from shopkeepers for repair and maintenance work but admitted that it has been operating without registration with any government authority.
In its statement, the association also acknowledged that the building’s doors were occasionally kept closed on the instructions of its president, raising concerns about safety and access during emergencies.
Meanwhile, the head of the judicial commission instructed the city’s chief fire officer to provide detailed records related to the incident.
The commission specifically requested fire call logs, fire brigade vehicle logbooks, and certified copies of relevant documents. Officials have been ordered to submit records covering January 17 to January 21.
