Russia launched a large scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine on Saturday killing at least five people and causing widespread damage across several regions Ukrainian officials said.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the main target of the strikes was energy infrastructure near the capital Kyiv. He added that residential buildings, schools, and businesses were also damaged in the assault. The attacks reportedly involved around 430 drones and 68 missiles, many of which were intercepted by Ukrainian air defense systems.
The regions of Sumy Kharkiv Dnipro and Mykolaiv were also targeted. In the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia, Governor Ivan Fedorov said Russian guided bombs struck a residential area, killing one person and injuring three others.
Officials in the Kyiv Region reported four additional deaths and at least 15 injuries as multiple districts suffered damage.
The strikes come amid shifting global attention toward tensions in the Middle East. Zelenskyy warned that Russia could attempt to exploit the situation to intensify attacks in Ukraine.
The assault also prompted Poland, a member of NATO to scramble fighter jets to protect its airspace though no violations were reported.
