Foundation says decision was made to keep spotlight on AI policy as scrutiny intensifies over newly released US documents
Bill Gates has stepped back from delivering the keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, a move that comes amid renewed scrutiny linked to documents released by the United States Department of Justice.
In a statement issued by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, officials said the decision was made after internal discussions to ensure the six-day summit remains focused on artificial intelligence policy, innovation and development goals. Organizers later updated the event program, confirming that Gates would no longer appear as a keynote speaker.
The development follows US media reports regarding newly disclosed files connected to the investigation into late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Reports said a draft email in the documents contained allegations concerning Gates’ personal life. Gates has denied the claims and previously acknowledged that meeting Epstein was a mistake, saying their interactions centered on philanthropy and global health fundraising.
Ankur Vora, who oversees the foundation’s Africa and India operations, will represent the organization at the summit.
Despite international attention surrounding Gates’ absence, the India AI Impact Summit continues as planned, drawing policymakers, tech leaders and researchers from over 20 countries to discuss AI governance, emerging technologies and responsible innovation.
