Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s Collateral mode introduces a round-based economy system without respawns, custom classes or traditional killstreaks.
Activision is introducing a major gameplay shift in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 with Collateral, a new round-based multiplayer mode built around cash management, limited equipment and no respawns.
The mode takes direct inspiration from the structure of games such as Counter-Strike and Valorant. Players begin each round with the same pistol and a set amount of money, then earn additional cash through eliminations and objectives. That money can be spent between rounds on weapons, armor, perks and equipment.
Collateral represents a significant departure from Call of Duty’s traditional formula of fast respawns, custom classes and frequent killstreaks.
How Collateral Works
Collateral uses a format familiar to players of Search and Destroy. Teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites, with each round requiring players to make decisions about how much of their available cash to spend.
Purchased equipment is lost when a player dies, while the player’s remaining money carries into the next round. This creates a risk-reward system in which spending heavily can improve a team’s chances but also leave it vulnerable if the round is lost.
The shop includes armor, perks, grenades, pistols and several categories of primary weapons.
Available items include the Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Fast Hands and Ghost, along with Flash Grenades, Molotov Cocktails, Fragmentation Grenades, Stims, Smoke Wall and a Riot Shield.
Weapon options include a Silenced Pistol, Revolver, Akimbo Pistols, Power Pistol, Shotgun, Light Machine Gun, Marksman Rifle, Silenced SMG and Agile SMG. Higher-tier options include semi-automatic, high-damage, burst-fire and silenced rifles, as well as a sniper rifle.
The Recon UAV is the mode’s team-based purchase, requiring players to pool their money.
What Makes the Mode Different
Collateral removes respawns, automatic health regeneration and custom classes, while largely eliminating killstreaks. Perks remain available but must be purchased with in-game currency.
The concept is not entirely new to Call of Duty. Treyarch’s Heist mode in 2018’s Black Ops 4 also introduced a cash-based competitive system. Modern Warfare 4 will additionally feature Inflation, another cash-based mode described as a Team Deathmatch-style experience.
However, Collateral is designed around a stricter economy and a round-based structure.
Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch Oct. 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. Console availability for Collateral remains unclear, as Insider Gaming has reported that Activision described the mode as PC-only.
Activision has also not confirmed whether Collateral will be used in Call of Duty esports. Starting cash amounts and earning rates have yet to be detailed.
The mode’s long-term appeal will depend heavily on how Activision balances its economy. Losing too much cash after a poor round could make recovery difficult, while generous earnings could reduce the strategic value of purchasing decisions.
Collateral therefore represents more than another multiplayer option: it is an attempt to adapt a familiar competitive economy to Call of Duty’s weapons, movement and pacing.
