Indian social media influencer Manjeet Kaur died after suffering severe burns in an alleged abduction and assault nearly eight weeks earlier.
CHANDIGARH, India: A 28-year-old social media influencer, Manjeet Kaur, has died nearly eight weeks after she was allegedly abducted, assaulted and set on fire in Chandigarh, according to a complaint filed by her mother and police action following her death.
Kaur died Aug. 26 while undergoing treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh. She had suffered severe burn injuries in the alleged attack on July 3.
According to a complaint filed by Kaur’s mother, Kanta Devi, two acquaintances identified as Shabhi and Pinda allegedly called her to meet near a liquor shop in Sector 34, Chandigarh, on the night of July 3.
The complaint states that the two men allegedly forced Kaur into a vehicle and took her to Morinda in Punjab. Upon reaching the location, they allegedly assaulted her, tied her to a mulberry tree and set her on fire.
A person who reportedly saw Kaur engulfed in flames used a blanket to put out the fire and helped take her to a hospital. She was later shifted to a hospital in Mohali before being transferred to PGIMER Chandigarh on July 9 because of the severity of her injuries.
Kaur remained unconscious for several weeks, according to her family. Her relatives said she briefly regained consciousness on Aug. 5 and told them about the alleged attack. Her condition subsequently deteriorated, and she died from complications related to her severe burns on Aug. 26.
Following her death, Chandigarh police registered a case at the Sector 34 police station and named two suspects. Police have reportedly been conducting raids at different locations to locate and arrest them.
Investigators are also questioning Kaur’s family members and friends as they examine other aspects of the case. The allegations against the suspects have not been independently established in court.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as police continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction and attack.
