Jamaat-e-Islami South Waziristan Lower chief Asadullah Baheer calls for urgent measures to address staff shortages, faulty equipment and limited medical services at DHQ Hospital Wana.
WANA: Patients at District Headquarters Hospital Wana are reportedly facing difficulties due to shortages of specialist doctors, medical officers, nursing and technical staff, as well as malfunctioning medical equipment, Jamaat-e-Islami South Waziristan Lower district chief Asadullah Baheer said.
Baheer said hospital sources had reported shortages of specialists in key departments, including anesthesia, pathology, radiology, ENT, urology and nephrology. Complaints of insufficient medical and nursing staff have also emerged in the emergency, medical and surgical wards.
According to hospital sources, interns are also being used in some areas to help address staffing shortages.
The sources said the C-Arm machine has been out of order for several years, while the CCU/cardiology unit is nonfunctional. The dialysis unit is also reportedly operating with only a limited number of functional machines.
Several emergency monitors and beds in different wards are also said to be in poor working condition, according to the sources.
The availability of medicines and IV injections has also been cited as a concern. Hospital sources said medicines and injections, including Flagyl (Metronidazole), Ceftriaxone and Risek (Omeprazole), were unavailable at the facility.
Patients and their attendants are also reportedly facing difficulties related to access to clean drinking water, public toilets and ambulance services.
Hospital sources further said patients requiring treatment for neurosurgery, vascular surgery, stroke, angiography, angioplasty, pacemaker procedures and certain complex orthopedic cases are referred to Dera Ismail Khan because the required facilities are not available at DHQ Hospital Wana.
Baheer urged the provincial health department, relevant authorities, the deputy commissioner and the district health officer of South Waziristan Lower to take immediate steps to address shortages of specialist doctors, medical officers, nursing and technical staff at the hospital.
He also called for faulty medical equipment to be restored and for patients to be provided with necessary medical services in a timely manner.
Baheer warned that if timely and effective measures were not taken to resolve the hospital’s problems, Jamaat-e-Islami would be compelled to resort to protest.
