Heavy rainfall forecast from July 19 to July 25 has prompted the PDMA to warn of glacier lake outburst floods and flash flooding across several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning that heavy rainfall and accelerated glacier melting could trigger dangerous flash floods between July 19 and July 25.
According to the PDMA, widespread rain is expected across northern parts of the province during the forecast period, increasing the risk of flooding in mountainous areas and communities located near rivers and streams.
Officials said continuous rainfall may speed up glacier melting, raising the likelihood of glacier lake outburst floods. Such incidents can unleash sudden torrents of water, posing a serious threat to downstream settlements and infrastructure.
The alert covers Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Bahrain, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra. District administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert, closely monitor vulnerable locations, and coordinate with relevant departments to ensure a swift emergency response.
Authorities have also directed local administrations to activate contingency plans and maintain close surveillance of rivers, streams, and glacier-fed lakes where flooding risks are elevated.
