A coordinated terrorist assault on a police check post in Hangu left nine officers dead and 28 injured, while security forces killed 15 attackers during a fierce overnight exchange of fire.
PESHAWAR: Nine police personnel, including DSP Diyar Khan, were martyred and 28 others injured after terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the Khazina Banda police check post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Hangu district late Wednesday night.
According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed, the attackers targeted officers while they were on duty. Police reinforcements immediately responded to the assault but were ambushed en route, damaging an armoured personnel carrier during the intense exchange of fire.
Security forces fought back, killing 15 terrorists and injuring several others in the operation. Authorities said the response prevented the attackers from achieving further objectives and helped secure the area after hours of fighting.
The inspector general praised the courage and professionalism of the police personnel, reaffirming that counterterrorism operations would continue across the province to eliminate militant threats.
In a separate incident the same night, terrorists attacked a police check post in Peshawar’s Adezai area. Police returned fire promptly, forcing the attackers to retreat without causing casualties or damage.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi strongly condemned the Hangu attack, paid tribute to the martyred officers, and extended condolences to their families. He also briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on the overall security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
President Zardari praised the sacrifices made by the country’s security forces and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to continuing operations against terrorism. The latest attack underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region, where law enforcement agencies remain on high alert amid continued counterterrorism efforts.
