K-Electric says its quarterly network review shows improvements in several Karachi feeders, while load-shedding continues in areas accounting for about 30% of its network.

KARACHI: K-Electric has claimed that around 70% of Karachi’s areas are currently free from load-shedding, while power outages continue across approximately 30% of its network, according to the power utility’s spokesperson.

The company said it had completed its quarterly network review, assessing changes in the performance of individual feeders and identifying improvements in several parts of the city.

According to the spokesperson, load-shedding remains linked to electricity theft and the non-payment of bills. K-Electric maintains that areas with higher electricity losses are more likely to experience power cuts.

The quarterly assessment showed that several feeders in Korangi, Orangi Town and Jamshed Town had moved from the high-loss category to the medium-loss category. The utility said the changes reflected progress in reducing electricity losses in these areas.

However, the improvement in feeder classifications does not necessarily mean that all consumers in the affected neighbourhoods have been completely exempted from power cuts. The availability of electricity can vary depending on the feeder serving a particular area and the conditions affecting its local supply.

The spokesperson also said K-Electric had carried out nearly 5,000 operations against electricity theft during the current year. More than 44,000 kilogrammes of illegal wires had been removed from the electricity network as part of the campaign.

The company said the operations were intended to curb power theft, reduce distribution losses and improve the overall performance of its electricity network.

Electricity theft and the non-payment of bills are among the factors K-Electric cites when explaining its load-shedding policy. Under the utility’s assessment, feeders with higher losses face a greater likelihood of scheduled power cuts, while improvements in feeder performance can lead to a change in their classification.

The latest review indicates that some parts of Karachi have recorded improvements in the utility’s assessment of electricity losses. Nevertheless, load-shedding remains an issue for consumers served by feeders that continue to fall within higher-loss categories.

The claim that 70% of Karachi’s areas are free from load-shedding is based on K-Electric’s own assessment. The utility’s statement does not establish that every neighbourhood within that share receives uninterrupted electricity.

For consumers, the actual duration and frequency of power outages may depend on their individual feeder and local supply conditions. The latest figures therefore provide an overview of the company’s network assessment rather than a guarantee of uninterrupted electricity for every household in the areas concerned.
