Defence Minister Khawaja Asif says the incident at PIMS exposed serious corruption and alleged that regulatory authorities were also involved.
SIALKOT: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has alleged that corruption in Pakistan’s health sector is more widespread than in any other sector, calling the recent incident at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) a “wake-up call.”
Addressing a ceremony in Sialkot, Asif said what happened at PIMS was solely the result of corruption and described it as a major tragedy.
He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had taken notice of the incident, adding that the events at the Islamabad-based hospital should serve as a warning about problems within the health sector.
“What happened at PIMS was a wake-up call,” Asif said, according to his remarks at the event.
The defence minister alleged that several people at PIMS were involved and claimed that the health regulatory authority was also part of the alleged wrongdoing.
Asif compared the situation to appointing thieves to the police force, saying the system appeared to have been focused on making money rather than providing healthcare services.
He said the level of alleged corruption in the health sector was deeply concerning and called for greater attention to the issues exposed by the PIMS incident.
