Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will release an additional 1,000 metric tonnes of wheat daily from Azakhel reserve warehouses after a court decision and Cabinet Oversight Committee directions.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Department has increased the province’s daily wheat supply quota from 3,000 to 4,000 metric tonnes following a Peshawar High Court decision and directions from the Cabinet Oversight Committee.

Under the revised arrangement, an additional 1,000 metric tonnes of wheat will be released daily from National Reserve Centre (NRC) warehouses in Azakhel to operational flour mills across the province. The move aims to facilitate the timely distribution of stored wheat and prevent further losses to existing stocks.

According to a Food Department notification, the additional allocation will be distributed among districts based on their respective shares of the province’s population, reported at 43.84 million.

The director of food has directed all district food controllers and rationing controllers to implement the revised quota and ensure that the additional wheat reaches the designated flour mills.

Peshawar will receive the largest additional allocation, at 116 metric tonnes per day. Mardan will receive 67 tonnes, followed by Swabi with 46 tonnes, Charsadda with 45 tonnes, Nowshera with 43 tonnes and Lower Dir with 40 tonnes.

Other allocations include 39 tonnes per day for Lower Swat, 35 tonnes for Abbottabad, 44 tonnes for Mansehra, 45 tonnes for Dera Ismail Khan, 33 tonnes for Bannu, 32 tonnes for Bajaur and 30 tonnes for Kohat.

The remaining quantity will be distributed among other districts according to their respective population shares.

The decision follows a report by the storage and enforcement officer at the NRC in Azakhel highlighting damage to stored wheat caused by recent floodwaters.

According to the report, floodwater entered the warehouses and affected the lower layers of wheat sacks. Six of the centre’s 11 warehouses sustained damage, while the remaining five were reported to be safe.

The increased daily quota is intended to accelerate the movement of wheat from the reserve centre to operational flour mills while reducing the risk of further losses arising from damaged storage conditions.

The revised arrangement also establishes district-wise allocations for the additional supply, with food department officials instructed to ensure implementation across the province.
