KP Prisons Department reviews proposed service rule amendments to improve merit-based promotions, fast-track career progression and competitive examination opportunities for jail warders.
PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department has moved forward with proposed reforms aimed at expanding career advancement opportunities for jail warders, including a proposed promotion pathway from BPS-7 to Assistant Superintendent of Jail (BPS-16).
A departmental committee meeting chaired by Inspector General of Prisons Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rehan Gul Khattak reviewed proposed amendments to existing service rules, focusing on employee promotions, career progression and the development of a more transparent, merit-based promotion system.
According to the information provided by the department, the meeting discussed the promotion mechanism for warders, fast-track promotion opportunities and measures to ensure that eligible employees can advance in their careers based on merit, qualifications and professional performance.
The committee finalized key recommendations concerning competitive examinations through the Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Public Service Commission, appropriate quotas and necessary amendments to the existing service rules.
A draft incorporating the proposed changes will be sent to the provincial Home Department shortly for further consideration. The proposed measures are intended to provide qualified, capable and highly educated employees with equal opportunities for promotion through a transparent and competitive process.
The recommendations focus on creating clearer career progression routes for prison staff while strengthening the role of merit and eligibility in promotion decisions. However, the proposals remain subject to the relevant departmental process and any required approval before they can be implemented.
Several senior officials attended the meeting, including Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (Headquarters) Neelam Sultana Khattak, DIG Ameen Shoaib, DIG Peshawar Region Baitullah Khan and DIG Swat Region Bakht Rawan, along with other officers.
During the meeting, Inspector General Rehan Gul Khattak directed the relevant officials to forward the draft amendments to the Home Department without delay.
The proposed reforms could create additional career opportunities for eligible prison warders if approved and implemented. The department’s next step is to submit the draft for consideration, paving the way for further decisions on promotion procedures, examination requirements and service rules.
