Senate debates over former PM Imran Khan’s health, highlighting legal and political concerns
ISLAMABAD: (Anwar Zeb Khan) Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas raised concerns in the Senate on Friday over former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health, questioning why his medical issues have not been addressed adequately. He claimed that even during last night’s medical check-up, Khan’s personal doctors were excluded, and courts have not responded to related petitions. “No one can buy or intimidate us. We are here to seek proper solutions for the public’s issues,” he said.
Responding, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarrar clarified that the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) board conducted Khan’s examination late at night, with Professors Nadeem Qureshi and Arif consulting. Khan was brought to PIMS at 11:30 PM, and the minister emphasized that there were no health emergencies; the procedure was conducted with Khan’s consent. Tarrar stressed that under the Constitution, no prisoner can receive a check-up solely at their request. He reiterated that Khan, being a convicted prisoner, cannot receive priority treatment despite his former status, and all citizens are entitled to equal legal rights.
The debate highlights the ongoing tension between political narratives and legal protocols regarding high-profile prisoners in Pakistan.
