Punjab expands its eco-friendly public transport network as the provincial government plans to add 1,500 more electric buses this year and build a fleet of 5,000 over the next five years.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a new fleet of green electric buses in five additional districts, expanding the province’s clean public transport network and bringing modern commuting facilities to more residents.
The electric bus service has been introduced in Layyah, Chiniot, Sialkot, Okara and Murree as part of the Punjab government’s ongoing efforts to provide affordable, environmentally friendly and comfortable transportation beyond the province’s largest cities.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz described the initiative as one of Pakistan’s largest public transport projects. She said the provincial government invested approximately Rs80 billion in procuring the electric buses to modernize Punjab’s transport infrastructure.
The chief minister said passengers would benefit from air-conditioned, safe and reliable buses, particularly during the peak summer season, while also helping reduce environmental pollution through cleaner transportation.
Reaffirming the government’s long-term transport strategy, Maryam Nawaz announced that 1,500 additional buses are expected to be added to the fleet during the current year. She also outlined plans to expand the network to 5,000 buses across Punjab over the next five years, aiming to improve connectivity and meet the growing travel demands of the province’s population.
