North Korea has conducted another test of strategic cruise missiles, according to reports from state media. The launch comes at a time when South Korea and the United States have begun their annual joint military exercises this week, a move that often heightens tensions in the region.
The state run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the missile test via video link on Tuesday. During the inspection, he emphasized the need to maintain and further strengthen the country’s powerful and reliable nuclear deterrence capability.
Images released by state media also showed Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, present during the monitoring of the test, continuing her recent appearances at major military events.
The missile test is the latest in a series of weapons demonstrations by Pyongyang. Just last week North Korea carried out another launch of a strategic cruise missile from a naval destroyer, signaling continued efforts to enhance its military capabilities.
The developments are likely to further increase tensions in the already sensitive Korean Peninsula.
