Pakistan Bar Council calls for constitutional compliance, parliamentary debate and national consensus on the creation of new provinces.
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council has unanimously passed a resolution calling for any decision on the creation of new provinces to be taken strictly in accordance with the Constitution, parliamentary procedures and national consensus.
The resolution emphasizes that the formation of new provinces should not be pursued outside the constitutional framework. Instead, the process must involve the required parliamentary proceedings and broad political agreement, reflecting the significance of any potential changes to Pakistan’s administrative structure.
The Pakistan Bar Council also urged all political parties to initiate meaningful dialogue on the issue while keeping the national interest at the center of discussions.
As part of its initiative, the council has decided to organize a national seminar on the creation of new provinces. Representatives of all political parties represented in Parliament, along with representatives of provincial bar councils from across the country, will be invited to participate.
According to the resolution, the proposed seminar aims to facilitate broader consultation on the issue and provide a platform for political and legal stakeholders to exchange views.
The council said the wider objective of the consultation is to strengthen the federation, promote better governance and help build national consensus on a matter with potentially far-reaching constitutional and administrative implications.
The move comes as discussions surrounding the possible creation of additional provinces remain an important political and constitutional issue in Pakistan. Any such changes would require adherence to the procedures prescribed by the Constitution and consideration through the appropriate parliamentary forum.
