Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a high-level inquiry into the deaths of newborns at PIMS and removed the federal health secretary from his post.
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday ordered the immediate removal and suspension of Federal Health Secretary Aslam Ghori following the deaths of newborn babies at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The prime minister chaired a high-level meeting to review the incident and expressed strong displeasure at the relevant officials over the tragedy.
During the meeting, Shehbaz ordered that Ghori be immediately suspended and removed from his position as federal health secretary.
The prime minister also constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Former Interior Secretary Shahid Khan has been appointed chairman of the inquiry committee. Secretary Establishment Dr. Barrister Noel Awan is among the other members of the committee.
The committee is expected to examine the circumstances that led to the deaths and assess the role of the relevant authorities and officials.
The development comes after a fire at the PIMS Children’s Hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in Islamabad, in which newborn babies were reported killed.
Earlier, officials said rescue teams responded to the fire at the hospital and launched emergency operations.
