Pakistan’s top leadership renewed support for the people of Kashmir, urging the international community to take meaningful steps toward a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute.
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir on Kashmir Exploitation Day, calling on the international community to take a more active role in resolving the decades-old dispute.
In separate messages issued on Wednesday, both leaders stressed that lasting peace and stability in South Asia depend on a peaceful and just settlement of the Kashmir issue in accordance with international commitments and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
President Zardari said India’s actions since August 5, 2019, cannot change the internationally recognized status of Jammu and Kashmir or weaken the resolve of the Kashmiri people. He reiterated that Pakistan would continue to extend its political, diplomatic, and moral support to Kashmiris in their pursuit of their rights.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the measures introduced by India after August 2019 had resulted in increased restrictions on fundamental freedoms and intensified repression in the region. He also alleged that New Delhi was attempting to alter the demographic composition of the territory through unilateral measures.
The prime minister urged the international community to move beyond statements of concern and play a constructive role in achieving a fair, peaceful, and lasting resolution of the Kashmir dispute. He further called on India to end the alleged human rights violations in the region and reverse the decisions implemented in August 2019.
